If you host your blog in Blogger or Blogspot this must be useful for you. Most Blogger users probably don't notice about this and continue to blog in a "traditional way". And then some of them complain because of the low number of traffics visit their blog event they already publish numbers of post everyday. One of the reason behind this is most Blogger users use a default template without modify it to improve the quality in terms of features and structure. In Wordpress you can simply improve your themes by using plugins. But in Blogger template you need to do some tweaks. Some people call it "hacks".

The first tweak that you can apply is to optimize the Blog Title for search engine results thereby you can increase visitors to your blog. All you need to do is to add some codes to the "Title" section of your blog template. To do this goto your Blogger dashboard Layout>Edit HTML.

Find the code below :

<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

Replace with the following code :

<!-- Changing the Blogger Title Tag Code Start -->
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;index&quot;'>
<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageName/> ~ <data:blog.title/></title>
</b:if>
<!-- Changing the Blogger Title Tag Code End -->

Save your template. It would take sometimes for Search Engine to reindex your blog. I have tested this tip on this blog and my Search Engine traffic is slightly increased just in few days.

Every blogger are looking for traffic coming to their blog. For some people they are willing to pay for some money to get more traffic to their blog. But what kind of traffic are you looking for? I am not an SEO expert but what i learn from my blogging experience basically there are 3 types of traffic that coming to a blog or website. Each of these type has pros and cons depend on how you deal with them. In this post i'll talk about all of these 3 types and how it fits to your blogging style.

1. Direct Traffic

I describe Direct Traffic as traffic generated manually without intervention from other 3rd parties. Usually this kind of traffic coming from people who access your blog or website by typing the address directly on their browser or from their bookmark. If you have high traffic from this type it means you have a group of loyal visitors. This is good because you managed to build a good image of your blog to your readers that there's something interesting that made them to revisit your blog.

2. Referral Traffic

From it's name we know that this type of traffic generated from sites that referred to your blog. There are many sources of Referral Traffics. I noted at least there are 4 of them :
  • Social Media - In Social Media you get traffic from people who see the link in the community. Usually it's because there's something interesting that make them visit the link. The number of traffic from this Social Media is depend on how active you are in that community. The more activities you do the more chances for you to get traffic coming to your blog. This Social Media includes communities like Digg, StumbleUpon, del.icio.us, technorati, mybloglog and many more.
  • Link Exchange - Link Exchange is a method of link building by exchanging link with other sites or blogs. This method sometimes takes a lot of times and efforts. One of the popular Link Exchange is EntreCard. I have proved it in this blog by driving high traffic from EntreCard but i have to spend a lot of times to get it.
  • Blog Directory - The good thing about blog directory is you only need to submit your blog once and then it will show any update of your blog in the directory and then drive people to visit your blog.
  • Other Referring Sites - This group is for all other referring sites that are not part of the previous ones. One of the most effective site i found is the Blogger. Since this blog is hosted on Blogger it will show this blog on the "Last Updated Blogs" section every time i there's an update that makes other Blogger users click it.
This type of traffic is good but need a lot of efforts and consume much of your times if you goals is to drive huge traffics. In some situation you may not have enough time to do all of these activities.

3. Organic Traffic

I'm not sure why they called it Organic Traffic. But this type of traffic is the one that are generated from Search Engine when someone looking for something by typing a keyword. This is the ideal condition by letting Search Engine drive traffic to your blog. With this condition you can focus on the content of the blog and let the search engine help you to drive traffic to your blog. But to achieve this you need to do some tweaks on your blog to optimize it. That's why there's a method called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The purpose it to make your blog search engine friendly.

Now it's all up to you which type of traffic are you looking for? Each of them has pros and cons. But for me, i'm trying to get more Organic Traffic coming to my blog.

This blog is hosted on Blogger and i have been using it for more than 6 months now. But during that period i sometimes found that i still have not utilized all of the features effectively. Event sometimes i notice that i do some mistakes or just don't realize that new features are available but i don't use it. Here are 10 facts you may not know about Blogger blog like what i experienced during my blogging activity.

1. There is a blog update section on the Login Page of the Blogger

Start from the very first page of Blogger you will see that there's a section showing the latest updated blogs. This is very important since it could be your chance to get clicked by other Blogger users when your blog is listed on this section. That's why it's important to update your blog regularly.

2. Blogger has a trial version called Blogger Draft

Blogger in draft is a special version of Blogger where Blogger team try out new features before they release them to the public. Sometimes there are many cool new features in trial you can find here. Recently Blogger released 5 new features in Blogger Draft. You can also choose to login to Blogger Draft by default instead of the current Blogger.

3. Blogger has 2 kind of templates

If you have been blogging with Blogger for long times you must know that there's a classic Blogger template besides the new beta template. The classic template usually distributed in HTML code while the new beta template is distributed in XML code. You can switch between these 2 but lately most blogger prefer to use the XML template for more features and widgets.

4. Hard-coded vs Widgetized Blogger Template

In the beginning of my blogging experience i had hard times to work with the Blogger beta template. I tend to search for a fully widgetized template. But later on i realized that actually i can edit the template my self or event modify it to be a fully widgetized template. I just need to spend sometimes to do it.

5. News update for Blogger blog

Right after your blog dashboard there is a section for news update from Blogger Buzz. You can find if there is a new feature, bug fix, etc here. But unfortunately i rarely visit this section and then lost some useful information.

6. Use a Custom Domain

I still see many Blogger blogs use .blogspot.com for their blog. While actually that's not a good practice. If you have a plan to extend your blog for business in the future you better start to use a custom domain from the first time you start your blog. This is because all of your posts will be indexed by search engine using your blog domain as well as your blog link popularity and rank. If you decided to use a custom domain when your blog is already popular you will lost all of them.

7. Have your post delivered to your email

If you have not set your email to receive your blog post you better do it right now. This is very important since you are hosting your blog in a free service. The best that you can do is to get the copy of your blog post as a backup to your email

8. Multiple Authors are possible in Blogger

In some cases you might want to have someone posting on your Blogger blog. Instead of writing the post your self and publish it you can add another authors to your Blogger blog and let them do it them self.

9. Add Adsense directly from the Blogger

If you monetize your blog with Adsense you can add the addsense code directly from the blog post template called Inline Ads instead of copying the code manually from Adsense and add it to your blog. You can also customize the adsense format and colors.

10. Customize Fonts and Colors of the template

If you are not sure how to customize fonts and colors of your template because you don't really expert in CSS and other coding skills, don't worry. There's an option to do it on Blogger. It's really simple and everybody can do it. You only need to select the element you want to edit and change the settings.

That's all. You may have different experiences or want to add another fact. Share it here and write your comment.

Love Letter from EntreCard

Posted by James | 6/27/2008 | | 2 comments »

Today i received an email from EntreCard team that shocked me. One of the issue on the subject was about Account Deletions. I have heard about this issue from some blogs before and I thought i am one of the user that have been removed from EntreCard. But fortunately not and after reading the whole email i think my blog is supposed to be not one of the blogs intended by this email.

Basically the email is a warning for all EntreCard users who didn't meet the new regulation especially intended to "Quick Drop" or "PowerDrop" or whatever the same kind of service. These group of blogs are intentionally developed to make the page loaded quickly so other users tend to choose this page to drop their card. For this purpose the page usually only contains the EntreCard widget it self. This is an illegal in EntreCard and starting from July 1, 2008 EntreCard will remove all of accounts like this. This is also mentioned on EntreCard blog.

What you should do to avoid the account deletion? All you have to do is to remove your widget from this kind of website since EntreCard will also remove your account if they found your widget on this "quick drop" pages. Another thing is starting from now don't drop your card on this kind of pages since you will get penalties for this.

Back to few months ago i remember BlogRush did the similar screening. But at that time it was more likely a quality review and that screening had removed more than 10,000 blogs. We'll see how many blogs will be removed from EntreCard with this issue.

On my previous post i categorized EntreCard (EC) users into 7 groups. But basically there are only 2 main groups of EC users :
  • Publishers - As Publisher you put the EC widget on your blog and then let other users to drop their card or advertise on your blog
  • Advertisers - As Advertiser you put your ads on someone's widget and pay for some EC credits for a period of time.
The 7 groups i mentioned before is more like the kind of activities that the EC users usually do to get the benefit of EC. But what i found from my own experience most of the time the EC users don't really aware of what they are doing and what they will get. In this way they will waste their EC credits or sometime money and also time spent on the EC. In this post i'll share about few tips to utilizing the EC effectively so you can Make the Most of EntreCard.

Publishers

As a publishers your main objectives are to get as much as possible credits into your account. To achieve this you usually do the following things :
  • Attract more EC users to drop more cards on your EC widget
  • Get more advertisers to purchase your EC spot
Based on my experience there are few tips you can do :
  • Put your EC widget above the fold - Advertisers and other EC users will be landed on your main page when opening your blog. The EC widget will get the most exposure if you put it on the first page of your blog without scrolling it. If you managed to get more impression they probably will scroll to the next page of your blog. Personally i wouldn't pay for EC spot which is placed somewhere unseen on the blog.
  • Control your Ads price - You need to understand first about how the ads price is calculated. What you need to do is to control your ad price based on your blog worth. I have seen many blogs with extremely high price but not worth enough compared to the quality of the blog. I prefer to keep the ad price lower but get continuous buyer.
  • Drop more cards - EC users normally will find your card easily when browsing to the campaign page of the EC website. But instead of waiting for someone find you better if you proactively find them and drop your card on their widget. The more cards you drop the more drops you will get. In my experience about 50-60% of cards i dropped will get replied.
  • Update your blog regularly - Everybody is always interest on something up to date. They will not advertise on your blog if they found that it's not updated for long time.
Advertisers

As an Advertisers your main objectives are to promote your blog and in return will get more traffic coming to your blog. To achieve this you usually do the following things :
  • Advertise on someone's blog and pay for some EC credits
  • Drop your cards
Based on my experience there are few tips you can do :
  • Choose Ads spot with the best widget placement - On many blogs i saw the EC widget is placed exactly on the bottom of the page. IMO these EC users don't understand about advertising concept or don't really count EC as a good marketing tools to promote their blog. For these kind of blogs never buy their ads spot. The best place is the above the fold principle.
  • Watch the Ads Price - High price doesn't always mean that the blog is worth enough. (See again how the ads price is calculated). You better check the blog first for some basic statistics (link popularity, Visitors & Page impressions, etc) before you decide to advertise on it and then compare to the price. If it's worth enough go purchase the ads spot.
  • Design an attractive banner - Most of the times there will be nobody click on your ads event you have follow the previous tips. It's simply because of your banner design. It's recommended to have an interesting or provocative banner design if possible to attract people to click it. A banner with sexy girl is more attractive than just a traditional banner with some words and background color.
  • Don't put your ads on an lonely blog - No matter how good is your ads if it's placed on a lonely blog it will be useless. The indicator of an activity of a blog is the last update of the blog like the last post, comments, visitors, etc.
Anyway, this is just my own perspective. You might also have another experience or tips so we can discuss together. But one thing for sure is that EntreCard is one of the best tools so far for blog promotion at least for my blog. What about you?

This is what i recently aware about. I have changed my blog template for couple of times. The last template i used was the Langit Template. But just few days ago i change it back again to this template. The reason is clear "the blog loading time" issue.

Few weeks ago i was accessing this blog from a location with not a really good internet connection. And i found that it took a long time until the main page completely loaded. This made me think about how if this is happened to another people out there who try to access this blog? I'm sure that they will never comeback again.

To assess this issue i have looked for an online tool to check the website loading time and i found one site which provide such service with no cost at all. The site name is WebSiteOptimization.

Basically there are few things that will be checked by this test :
  • Global statistics covering the Total HTTP Requests and Total size of the website
  • The total object size of the webiste like the HTML, HTML Images, CSS Images, Javascript, CSS, Multimedia and other files
  • External Objects
  • Download Times
  • Page Objects
This test is also come with an Analysis and Recommendations regarding the test result which you can take into your consideration about your blog or website. Below is the test result of the OnlineTechJournal or this blog.

I can see from the statistic that this is 2 times faster than the previous Langit Template. With this reason i'm sure you will do the same thing. Now, you can do the same test with you blog and start to think to change your blog template as well to serve your readers better.

Blogger Backup with Wordpress

Posted by James | 6/12/2008 | | 0 comments »

One of the most simple ways to backup your Blogger blog is to use Wordpress. There are 2 options available :

        • Use the Free Wordpress hosting
        • Pay for server hosting and use the Wordpress feature
It depends on you. But i guess most people will choose the first option so they don't need to pay for server hosting, no problem.

To backup your Blogger blog using Wordpress is easy and simple. You can follow the steps below to start doing this.
  • Open Wordpress website. If you don't have any account yet you can register first, it's free.
  • Create a blog including all settings, designs, etc. Once it's created go to the blog dashboard - manage
  • Click on the "Import" section. There are 5 blog platforms available in the option, choose "Blogger". As the requirement, your Blogger account must be upgraded to the new Beta version before you can import from Wordpress.
  • Click on "Authorize". On the next page you will be asked to grant access to your Blogger account. Enter your Google account and password and then click "Grant Access".

On my previous post i wrote about "Where Your Traffic came from?". For this blog about 20% of the traffic came from Blogger/referral. Do you know what it means?

If you open the Blogger site there's a section on the main page named "Blogs Updated". This section will show any blogs that is just been updated. Considering the huge number of Blogger users there's a high possibility of your blog to get clicked by other blogger users. The only thing you need to do is to update your blog regularly so it will be shown on this section.

With this reason it's important to update your blog regularly. And i think it's not for Blogger users only but the same think happened to another blogger.

Learning from the Long Outage of EntreCard server because of the electrical fire few days ago one thing we need to take care about is the backup of our blog. Imagine if suddenly you cannot access your blog and everything is gone. All you've done for long time will be useless unless you have a backup of your blog.

In this case i'm talking about backup of a Blogger blog where this blog is hosted. You don't need to think about a complicated system to start backup your blog. I'll show you a very simple ways and i guarantee everyone can do that.

1. Use Text Processor

The most simple way is to use text processor. It could be a notepad or MS Word. You can write your post using this application and save it somewhere on your computer folder in .txt or .doc file. For images you can save it in another folder. You better avoid writing your post directly on the web since you will not have a backup of it once it's published.

2. Get your post delivered to your email

In Blogger there's an option to let Blogger send the copy of your post to your email whenever it published. Make sure you put your email address correctly here. In this way you will have a copy of your blog post in your inbox. In Blogger you can do this by going to dashboard - setting - email and put your email address there.

3. Subscribe to your own RSS

You probably think that this is strange because you are subscribing to your own articles. But when it comes to a disaster you will see why you do that. By subscribing to your RSS you will have a backup of your blog posts. You can use various RSS readers like i wrote on my previous post

4. Blogger Backup with Wordpress

The idea is to backup your Blogger blog using wordpress. I'll post separate article about this later.

Now you don't have to worry about backup for your blog again in case of disaster since you have it already.

Where Your Traffic came from?

Posted by James | 6/10/2008 | | 0 comments »

Recently i spent sometime to learn about the source of traffic coming to my blog. Using Google Analytics i found that in the last few months most of traffics to my blog came from referral sources especially EntreCard (about 36%). It because of my intense activities with EntreCard in the last few months.

See the details of the top 10 sources of my blog traffic on the chart below.

With this condition i love EntreCard so much since this is one of the most effective ways to get traffic to your blog. I spend around 15 - 30 minutes a day dropping my card and it's worth enough, no money required so far. I'll tell you later about this.

So what about you? Where your blog traffic came from so far? You can share it here and let's discuss about it.

If you look at the Alexa Traffic Rank, Page View is one of parameters that is used to calculate the rank. The same thing you can find in other website tracking system like Google Analytics, Site Meter, etc. So page view becomes so important since it will show how attractive is your blog for your readers. If the page view is the same with the number of visits means that your readers don't read anything but the thing you put on the main page of your blog or the page view per visits is equal to 1. To increase this rate you need to make your blog more attractive so that the readers wish to click another pages on your blog. Below is 7 tips to increase your blog page view.

  1. Put the most interesting part of your blog on the your blog first page. - Most of people only read what they see on the first page of a blog. So this is your chance to get the attention of your readers.
  2. Drive your reader to another page of your blog. - I saw some blog without a navigation bar and this is not good. With "navigation bar" or you can call it "menu" you can drive your readers to another sites of your blog. You can also put the "category" section.
  3. Let your readers know the best part of your blog. - You can do this by putting a section like "Most Popular Posts" or "Most Discussed Articles", etc.
  4. Link to another page of your blog. - Sometimes your post could be related to another post on your blog. You can put the link on your post to let your readers click to that part easily.
  5. Right Ads placement. - Advertisement is always interesting and attractive, that's how they were designed. You can utilize this ads to get your readers attention.
  6. Use a provocative way. - It could be a pictures or words like a picture of a "sexy girl" or words like "Get easy money" that linked to another page of your blog.
  7. Use the "post summary" style in your post. - This method will automatically increase your blog page view everytime your readers click the "read more" to see the rest of the post.
Actually there are more ways to increase your blog page views. But these are what i remember right now. I have done most of them on my blog and it increased my blog page view significantly. Please free to do it on your blog as well.

What is the topic of your blog post? Do you have any considerations when choosing the topic of your blog post or you just write anything you like. Actually there's nothing wrong with that. But if you want to get a lot of traffic coming to your blog there are few things you need to consider. One of them is the power of search engine which is so efficient in driving traffic to your blog. But the question is how? One of the method that you can do is to use "most wanted" or "top search" keywords on your blog post.

There are many tools you can use but i recommend to try Google Trends. Recently i searched for couple of keywords to see how Google pattern their trend. From these keywords i found that "blogger template" and "wordpress theme" have made a significant growth in the last couple of months.

"Blogger template" trends

"Wordpress theme" trends

Now, are you in a process of creating a new blog or thinking about the topic for your blog post? so, you may try this method with another keywords.

If you look at the post on this blog some of them are presented in such format that is called Expandable Post Summary. Some of you might call it with the popular name "read more" format. The idea is to cut and hide some of the post content and give a link to the reader if they want to read the rest of the them. The purpose is to reduce space used on the blog page so you can put more things to the blog main page. In Blogger you need to customize the template using a script to enable this feature on your blog. There are various scripts available on the internet but not all them are work fine. The one that i use on this blog is taken from Hackosphere blog. With this script we can choose whether we want to use the feature or not. That's why we call it "Selective". Actually this feature is one of the oldest Blogger hack. But for you who are new with Blogger this will be useful for you.

You can follow the 3 simple steps blow to enable this feature on your blog.

1. Login to your Blogger account. From the dashboard go to your blog layout and select the "Edit HTML" section. Don't forget to check the "Expand Widget Templates". On your blog template code find the tag below :

</head>

Copy all code from this file and paste it right before it.

2. Find the section of the "post-body". Usually it will look like below :

<div class='post-body' expr:id='"post-" + data:post.id' >

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<style>#fullpost{display:inline;}</style>
<p><data:post.body/></p>
<b:else/>
<style>#fullpost{display:none;}</style>

<p><data:post.body/></p>

<span id='showlink'>
<a expr:href='data:post.url'>Read More......</a>
</span>
<script type='text/javascript'>
checkFull("post-" + "<data:post.id/>");
</script>
</b:if>

<div style='clear: both;'/> <!-- clear for photos floats -->
</div>

Add the portion of code in the blue color. For some templates might look different but the key is to find the "post-body" section. Save your template

3. Now you need to modify the post template. Go to "Settings" - "Formatting". At the bottom of the page you will find the "Post Template" section. Copy and paste the following code here and save the Settings.

Type your summary here
<span id="fullpost">

Later on if you create a new post this code will be shown on the post template. There are 2 sections there. If you are a blogger you must know the famous JohnChow. The first time i started this blog i visit his blog often to learn things about blogging. Event i signed up to TTZ Media, JohnChow own PPC Advertising. But lately i didn't spend much time to follow updates from JohnChow's blog until the time Alexa changed their traffic rank calculation algorithm. The most shocking moment was when the Alexa rank of JohnChow.com free fall from 5679 to 17088. On the next first update JohnChow.com managed to move to 15979 but then changed again to 17475 as per today.

The question is what is happening to JohnChow? I spent a moment to check on Alexa and this is what i got.

We can see that in the last few weeks the traffic to JohnChow.com was significantly decreased. There are 3 parameters as the indicators like the Reach, Traffic Rank and Page Views per user which all of them are decreased during the last 3 months. Then you may ask why? I tried to see the blog and you know what i found? In the last few posts JohnChow wrote more about his travelling story than blogging it self. You can see on the Recent Articles section of the blog. That's i the reason i guest why JohnChow lost it fascination.

On my previous post i mentioned that Maintaining Your Blog Template is Important. One of the reason is that re-working everything to have all previous features in place is painful. That's what happened to my blog. I used to have Google Analytics code installed on my blog to track my blog performance. But anytime i change my template i have to re-install the Google Analytics code to my blog. The problem is some bloggers may not know where to find the Google Analytics code unless they already copy and safe it on their computer.

What is Google Analytics?

From Google :

Google Analytics shows you how people found your site, how they explored it, and how you can enhance their visitor experience. Improve your website return on investment, increase conversions, and make more money on the web.

If you experience the same thing with me and you need to re-install the code you can follow the steps below :
  • Login to your Google Analytics account
  • Go to the "Website Profiles" and "Edit" the Settings.
  • On the top right of the Main Website Profile Information click on "Check Status"
  • Here you will find the Google Analytics code. You can also grab the new code by clicking on "New Tracking Code". Copy this code and add it to your blog template.
Since this blog is hosted on Blogger below is the easy way to install the Google Analytics code into your template.
  • Login to your Blogger account
  • Go to your blog layout. The code should be put into the template before the tag as instructed by the Google Analytics. But in Blogger xml template you can treat it as a widget by adding an "HTML/Java Script" Page Element anywhere on the blog but don't put the title for that.
  • Once you installed the code you have to verify it from Google Analytics. Go to the Analytics Settings and click on "edit". On the "Main Website Profile Information" click on "Check Status". If the code installed correctly you will see the "Receiving Data" status checked after the "Check Status". Another way to verify that the code is installed correctly is by looking at the page source of your blog main page. You should see the "Google Analytics" code. Check this article for more detail instruction.
After the code installation give sometime to let Google Analytics collect the data before you can see the statistic of your blog. And then to prevent doing these things again make sure you copy and safe the code before you change your blog template.
